It invites groups of tourists to explore the surrounding banana plantations and learn everything about this fruit. During this experience, visitors gain insight into the traditions of planting and processing bananas in Uganda and can also try fresh banana juice and local banana gin.
Rukararwe offers the opportunity to learn about one of Uganda’s key crops – bananas. Our Banana Tour takes groups of tourists through the surrounding banana plantations, where they learn how bananas are grown, harvested, and transformed into juice, beer or gin.
On today’s tour, the plantation owner explained the different banana types – some are used for cooking, others for making beer, and there are even more types. He also showed the planting and harvesting techniques, and what it takes to maintain a healthy plantation without using any pesticides. The visitors gained insight into traditional farming methods and saw how the farmer’s work on the plantation looks like. More than once, the visitors were surprised about how fascinating this fruit actually is.
Towards the end of the tour, the plantation owner demonstrated how bananas are turned into juice by hand and then fermented to produce beer and gin. The process was shown step-by-step, from the raw fruit to the final product. Finally, the visitors could taste the freshly made banana juice, a sweet and refreshing drink, just as the local banana gin, which can also be purchased to bring home as a souvenir.
To round off the tour, a traditional Ugandan meal awaited the group at Rukararwe. The visitors enjoyed their lunch while exchanging their thoughts on all the interesting new things they learned during the tour.
